 STARLITE

Ages 3 to 4 years - 30 minute class

This introductory dance course is designed for developing dance skills at a young age.  Through a combination of Ballet, Jazz, free movement, and dance-based games, your child will learn skill sets such as teamwork and creativity, and gain self-confidence while learning to integrate rhythm and movement.

Attire:

  • Pink ballet slippers, leather or canvas, with elastics (Girls)
  • Black ballet slippers, leather or canvas, with elastics (Boys)
  • Pink or black leotard (Girls)
  • Ballet pink tights (Girls)
  • Black dance pants or shorts (Boys)
  • White t-shirt (Boys)
  • Hair must be pulled back from face
  • May wear tutu or skirt (Girls)

  

JAZZY JUMPERS **NEW**

Ages 3 to 4 years - 30 minute class

This class is for all the little ones who just want to get up and move.  Various exercises, dance games and stretches are taught to fun and upbeat music.  This class incorporates all of the beginner FUNdamentals of dance focusing on rhythm, balance, flexibility and following instruction in a class setting.

Attire:

  • Choice of leotard (Girls)
  • Light tan stirrup or footless tights (Girls)
  • Black dance pants or shorts (Boys)
  • Choice of t-shirt (Boys)
  • Hair must be pulled back from face

  


 HIP-HOP

Ages 7 years and older

Hip-Hop is a high-energy, fun form of dance that is full of attitude.  This style is set to a strong beat and emphasizes body isolations, co-ordination, freestyle movement, and rhythm.  Hip-Hop is seen in many dance movies and current music videos.

 PRE-HOP

Ages 4 to 6 years - 30 minute class

A fun introductory class to Hip-Hop.  Movements are slower and simplified compared to the fast pace of a regular Hip-Hop class with a greater focus on rhythm and attitude.

Attire:

  • Indoor, CLEAN running shoes or Hip-Hop shoes (*dancers will not be allowed in class if shoes worn outdoors)
  • Loose fitting clothing (i.e. dance or track pants)
  • T-shirt or tank top (no exposed midriff) 
  • Hair must be pulled back from face
  • No jeans

 


 JAZZ  

Ages 4 years and older

Get ready to jump, kick and turn through a combination of barre exercises, across the floor movements, and dance routines.  Students will learn technique and dance lines, as well as gain flexibility and build strength towards their dance skills. Jazz students will have the option to train towards the B.A.T.D. examination process.

Attire:

  • Beige Jazz shoes
  • Black or Blue (for exam classes) sleeveless leotard (Girls)
  • Full footed light tan tights (Girls)
  • Black dance pants (Boys)
  • Black t-shirt (Boys)
  • Hair must be pulled back from face
  • May wear black dance shorts over tights (Girls)  

 


 DANCE CONDITIONING

Ages 10 years and older - 30 minute class 

This fitness-based class conditions dancers by encompassing a series of toning, stretching and cardio exercises to increase muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and balance in all styles of dance.  Students are trained to become strong, controlled and confident dancers, enabling them to execute more advanced movements.  This is an excellent class to take in addition to other dance classes, as it helps reinforce technique and improve abilities.  Please note that it is mandatory for all competitive students, 12 years of age or older to attend at least one Conditioning class per week.  There is no year end recital performance for this class.

Attire:

  • Jazz shoes, Ballet slippers, foot undies or bare feet
  • Choice of appropriate dance attire (no exposed midriff)
  • Must wear tights with dance shorts
  • No jeans
  • Hair must be tied back

 


 CONTEMPORARY 

Ages 7 years and older

Focusing on emotional expression, this versatile form of dance explores different styles of movement, with a strong emphasis on technique.  In this class, students will learn to move sharp, gracefully or even both ways at once, through a series of across the floor combinations and centre routines.  Full of choreographic possibilities, Contemporary can be danced to all types of music and may be fused with any other dance style to create a new and unique series of movements, as often seen on "So you think You Can Dance".

  • Beige foot undies
  • Any colour leotard (Girls)
  • Light tan footless tights (Girls)
  • Dance shorts may be worn over tights 
  • Black or white t-shirt (Boys)
  • Black dance pants or shorts (Boys)
  • Hair must be pulled back from face

 


 BALLET

Ages 4 years and older

Ballet is the foundation of all dance forms.  Posture, technique, barre, centre work, Ballet terminology and anatomy will be taught through age specific syllabus, according to British Association of Teachers of Dancing (B.A.T.D.).  Students will focus on discipline, posture, grace, strength, memorization, and will have the option to train towards the B.A.T.D. examination process.

Attire:

  • Pink Ballet slippers, leather or canvas, with elastics or ribbons (for senior students)
  • Black Ballet shoes (Boys)
  • Black, (mauve or teal for exams) sleeveless leotard (Girls)
  • Full footed Ballet pink tights (Girls)
  • Black dance pants (Boys)
  • White t-shirt (Boys)
  • Hair must be worn in a bun

 


MUSICAL THEATRE

Ages 7 years and older

Musical Theatre is a unique form of entertainment that communicates the story and emotions of a stage piece through words, facial expressions, music and dance.  Using a variety of theatre games, activities and routines, this is an upbeat and fun class, where students develop confidence, performance skills and stage presence.

Attire:

  • Beige Jazz shoes
  • Any colour leotard (Girls)
  • Light tan tights (Girls)
  • Dance shorts may be worn over tights 
  • Black or white t-shirt (Boys)
  • Black dance pants or shorts (Boys)

 SONG AND DANCE

Ages 7 years and older

Song and Dance classes expose students to singing, dancing and acting.  A combination of vocal exercises, songs, theatre games, across the floor, and dance routines will prepare them to perform a dance in which they will also sing LIVE at the year-end recital!  Students will also be given the opportunity to record this song with their own vocals and purchase the recording if they choose. This class is for any student who has an interest in becoming a true Triple Threat!

  • Beige Jazz shoes
  • Any colour leotard (Girls)
  • Light tan tights (Girls)
  • Dance shorts may be worn over tights

 ACRO    

Ages 6 years and older

Acro is a combination of dance and gymnastics, targeting the artistic and controlled use of movement, strength, agility, balance and flexibility.  With unique choreography, students will learn techniques to execute captivating movements, while assuring their safety.

 PRE-ACRO

Ages 4 to 5 years

This introductory course will provide your child with the basic skills necessary to prepare them for the more advanced movements they will learn to execute in our Acro program.

Attire:

  • Barefoot
  • Any colour leotard (Girls)
  • Light tan footless tights (Girls)
  • Dance shorts over leotard optional (Girls)
  • Black or whitet-shirt (Boys) 
  • Black dance shorts (Boys) 
  • Hair must be pulled back from face, braids are preferable 

 


 LYRICAL

Ages 7 years and older

Lyrical is a style of dance that involves story telling with emotion, portrayed through body movement and facial expression, and includes a strong focus on the technical aspects of Ballet.  This smooth and rhythmic style will encourage dancers to interpret emotional content of a piece and gain a better understanding of choreography.

 Attire:

  • Beige foot undies
  • Any colour leotard (Girls)
  • Light tan footless tights (Girls)
  • Dance shorts may be worn over tights 
  • Black or white t-shirt (Boys)
  • Black dance pants or shorts (Boys)

 POINTE & PRE-POINTE

Senior Level Ballet Students

Pointe is the most highly disciplined and physically challenging extension of Ballet.  This class is designed for Senior level Ballet students, who have a firm physical capability of Ballet technique, balance and coordination.  

Attire:

  • Pointe (or soft) shoes with elastics and ribbons
  • Any colour leotard
  • Ballet pink tights
  • Hair must be worn in a bun

 


 TAP

Ages 6 years and older

Tap is a very unique form of dance, characterized by metal plates on the sole and heel of the shoe, allowing dancers to create percussive sound with their feet as musical instruments. Student will explore new and exciting rhythms through a series of barre exercises, across the floor combinations and centre work.

 TINY TAPS

Ages 4 to 5 years - 30 minute class

An introductory dance class teaching rhythm and movement through basic tap steps and dance moves.  Students are encouraged to make as much noise as they can with their feet to explore the different sounds their taps can make.

Attire:

  • Black patent or leather Tap shoes (Tiny/Junior)
  • Beige leather full Tap shoes (Intermediate/Senior)
  • Any colour (black for exam) leotard (Girls)
  • Full footed light tan tights (Girls) 
  • Dance pants or shorts may be worn over tights as long as shoes are visible
  • Black dance pants or shorts (Boys)
  • Black t-shirt (Boys)
  • Hair must be pulled back from face
  • May wear dance skirt or tutu (Tiny Taps)

 


 LEAPS & TURNS

Ages 6 years and older

This class is designed to improve jumps and turns for all ages and all levels of dance.  It will teach students how to properly prepare for, execute and complete jumps, leaps  and turns safely, preventing injury, while developing balance, strength, elevation and body alignment.  This is an excellent class to take along with any other class, as jumps, leaps and turns are technical aspects of dance, used in almost all forms of dance and choreography.   It is mandatory for all Competitive Students to attend at least one Leaps & Turns class per week.

Attire:

  • Jazz shoes, Ballet slippers, or foot undies
  • Choice of appropriate dance wear (no exposed midriff)
  • Hair must be swept away from face
  • Must wear tights with dance shorts
  • No jeans

 


 BALLET BOOTCAMP

Adult 

This Ballet inspired workout uses the principles of classical dance to tone and sculpt your entire body! Exercises are built on establishing a strong, healthy core, building individual confidence on a physical level to both protect and challenge the body while participating in sport or in everyday life. Using upbeat music, elements of barre work, cardio, core strengthening and flexibility, this class will tone your entire body, from head to toe.  No dance experience is necessary and all levels are welcome.  Get the dancer’s physique with this intense Ballet barre class.  

Attire:

  • Ballet slippers, Jazz shoes, foot undies or bare feet
  • May choose to wear appropriate dance or workout attire or loose fitting clothing

 


 COMPETITIVE CLASSES

Ages 5 years and older

Competitive classes will be held for those serious students who would like to attend dance competitions as part of a team to improve their dance and performance skills.  All competitive students must have a strong work ethic and attendance throughout the year, as well as maintain a positive attitude towards other students, teachers and competitors.  Competition requires commitment from both students and parents alike.  Auditions are held annually and we invite all interested dancers to attend. Let's go Kingston Danceforce!  A force to be reckoned with!

 


 EXAM CLASSES

Ages 5 years and older

Kingston Danceforce Studios will be offers B.A.T.D. (British Association of Teachers of Dancing) examinations in Ballet, Jazz and Tap to those students who are willing and prepared.  Exam syllabus will be taught in both the recreation and exam classes.  Students who would like to take examinations must attend examination classes for that grade to be considered.  Students are not required to take exams;  however, we do strongly encourage this, as exams offer a basis for class curriculum and can prepare students who are interested in becoming dance teachers.
